Why You Shouldn't Get Breast Implants
By Pamela N Red
It seems everyone is getting them, from celebrities to everyday housewives but should you join the ranks of swollen bosoms?
Being small of mammary glands, once upon a time I thought about it but soon swept that idea away after talking to many women who have them. Some are happy with their new figures but some not so much.
I’ve devised a list of reasons why it’s a bad idea. Oh sure there are a list of reasons you might consider it but have you thought about the cons?
This list isn’t in any particular order because everyone is different. What you think to be the most important won’t be the same for the next person.
- Sleeping On Your Stomach
We all have that position that is most comfortable for falling asleep and if yours is on your tummy you will have to find a new way to get some Z’s, either that or cut a hole in your mattress. I sleep on my stomach so this is a biggie for me.
- Nipple Sensation
Some women lose feeling in their nipples. I’ve even heard some become hypersensitive to the point of not being able to stand having them touched and some clothing irritates them. Mine might be small but they work very well and I’d rather not upset my current sex life for a bigger set.
- Pain
Depending on how small you are and how large you want to go they have to stretch the skin to make room for the implant. This is very painful. I knew a woman who was really flat and had C cup implants put in. She suffered for a few weeks with severe pain. I don’t like pain and avoid it when at all possible.
- Some Men Prefer Small
I know this may be hard to believe and the guys that prefer the big-busted babes seem to speak the loudest but I can tell you with complete assurance there are men who prefer smaller tatas. Not only that but since I fall in this category I have found that I prefer guys that are okay with what nature gave me and would rather not have a man who only stared at my bosoms.
Even though I am a “B” cup, which is average, with the growing number of women getting augmentation that may soon change.
- Cost
The price is different depending on where you live but you have to consider not only the cost of the surgery but the amount you will have to spend on new clothes, and medication.
Medical insurance will not cover it because it is cosmetic surgery. The only time it is covered is if you have had a mastectomy and even then some insurance doesn't cover it.
- Time Off From Work
Even though it is a surgery most places of employment won’t let you use sick leave. Since it isn’t considered a medical condition in most cases you will have to take vacation time. If your leave isn’t lumped into personal time off and you have to separate sick time off from vacation you need to think about this.
Some women assumed it would be considered sick leave and it wasn’t.
- Surgery Redo
I’m not a doctor; most of what I am telling is from friends and family members that have had this procedure done but you should really do your research and talk to other women who have had implants for several years. They are much better at giving you first hand advice than relying solely on a physician who does this procedure and is trying to sell you on the idea. There are good doctors that will give you the pros and cons making sure you know what you are in for but there are also those that are high-pressure salesmen
Capsular contracture: When foreign objects are put in your body your body forms a lining of living fibrous tissue around the object. In some patients the tissue will tighten and squeeze the implant making it feel hard and unnatural.
I couldn’t find a clear percentage of the amount of women that have this but the longer implants are in the greater the likelihood of the patient having it happen.
Excessive scar tissue may result. We all heal differently and some people have a tendency to scar worse than others.
I’ve heard of many women having replacements put in or the original ones removed after several years because they felt hard.
Leaking implants, infection and diseases can result. Do your homework before going under the knife.
- Suicide Rate
There have been studies for many years now noticing the high suicide rate among women who have had cosmetic implants, that is to say women who had them because they wanted enlargements and not for reconstructive purposes.
It isn’t really clear why this is but some researchers believe that women who typically get them have self-esteem issues so maybe women who seek the help of a plastic surgeon are more prone to depression.
- Breast Feeding
If you are a young woman who hasn’t had any children yet or plan to have more you may want to read the possible risks of nursing your future children. As of yet they aren’t certain if any silicone leaks into the milk or not or what potential harm may come to an infant who is nursed by a mother with an implanted breast.
Mother’s milk is the best thing for a baby and in my opinion they should all be fed this way for at least the first six weeks if possible. Not knowing the potential risks of leakage is an important thing to look into.
- Eye Contact
Many women who are endowed by nature or with surgical help have complained of men staring at their bosoms. When you have appendages that stick out they tend to be the focus of everyone’s attention. You might as well get used to the fact it will happen whether you like it or not.
Some women told me in the beginning they found the extra attention fun but after a while the newness wore off and they wished men would pay attention to what they had to say and less admiration for their boobs.
- Clothes
You may have trouble finding clothes that fit. Typically if a woman has a small waist and hips she has a small bosom as well so that is how most articles of clothing are made.
One friend was irritated because she had to buy larger sizes and have them altered. So in addition to having to tell people she was now a 10 instead of a 4 she had to pay a tailor more money to make them fit.
Some clothing retailers cater to women with augmentations like Victoria’s Secret but not everyone wants or is allowed to dress like a sex kitten for the office, not to mention the sort of attention you may get that isn’t of the utmost decent variety.

Be sure you are not getting your breasts enlarged because you don't think you can get a guy. Work on your assets and wear figure flattering clothes that make you look good.
Changes to your body should be done for you. Do you really want a man who is attracted to you for what's under your blouse?
- I Love Boobies Bracelets Banned From School
In recent news there have been a few schools banning bracelets bearing the message, “I ♥ Boobies”. I’m all for people raising money for breast cancer and realize the seriousness of the disease. I also enjoy titillating humor, but I don’t feel these

Natural breasts are much more sensual and appealing.;)
Yes, I agree, accept yourself and not put foreign products in your body! I'll stick with my A size cup (what can I say, nursing a couple of kids took some away). Oh well.
thanks for sharing
my friend, I'm a tummy sleeper, breastfed my two babies, have all sensation, can run (with high impact work out bras) and fully enjoy my breasts. The cost was about $10k but to me it was well worth it.
I've only known one guy who wanted his wife to get implants, and with him, big boobs was a fetish. She was already amply endowed and she refused. Smart lady.
I have come to the conclusion that women get implants not for their husbands, but for their own self esteem and to impress other women!
The men I know all say that they prefer a natural, small breast to a fake large breast, so don't do on our account!
Immartin, I have quite a few endowed friends and they have your same complaints. A couple got reduction surgery and were glad they did.
Mentalist, that's what I've heard some men say but I don't think most can really tell the difference.
Felicia, I nursed my two sons and didn't lose any. A friend of mine who was endowed before got bigger after nursing. Funny how that happens.
Deanna, you had a good doctor. That is great. Some aren't so lucky and have had problems.
Will, I wouldn't want to be with a man if he only wanted me for one part of my anatomy.
I was on the fence but thanks to you I've decided to leave my boobies as they are.
lol Micky, you crack me up.
Pamela, I have known several ladies who have had breast implants. One, being my sister, who had to have them removed because she was allergic to the silicone.
I have known women who got lupus after having implants and I think getting auto-immune diseases is a possibility to consider. I think you listed several good reasons not to get the surgery. voted/rated up.
I only know of one woman who has had this done. I tried to talk her out of it but failed. Now, I can’t look her in the eyes.
Pamela, I hadn't heard of that one but it's another reason to rethink getting them.
Mckbirdbks, I know what you mean.
Glad you wrote this - Full of insight.
A good wonder-bra will do the trick.
Thanks
Lady_E, I don't worry so much anymore. I will be glad when this underwire trend passes.
Hi bravo, you nearly got me cracking my head with laugther at those funny pictuers in there.nice hub and very interesting.
I like to add a bit of comic relief when I can, crystolite. Thanks for reading.
I'm so glad you had the self confidence and esteem not to get breast implants. Alot of women don't ask around or do research first only to regret it years later. Human Adjuvant Disease and ALCL Lymphoma can show up 5 - 10 years after implants. Great hub!
Inbo5599, It's not worth the health risks to do that to your body.
a wonderful list for any one considering the surgery, its a great thing to be able to weigh up the pros and cons
Nighthag, I know many women feel they need them but they do need to look at what can go wrong.
Self confidence and self esteem is great but what if women do not have that?
BIS, breast implants seldom help a woman with self esteem issues. There is usually other things going on inside and she needs counseling to help her feel better about who she is.
Breast implants have not only improves the image of the person also improves their self-esteem
A woman's health should not be risked just for larger breasts. A woman is more than her mammary glands and until men realize that women will continue to put their body's in danger.
Great hub.Very informative for women health.
thanks for sharing.
Thanks for reading, fashion.
Whether or not to get breast implants is subject to individual situation and circumstance. It is difficult to put a finger on one generic yet very specific answer and say "No one should ever have breast implants", or "Breast implants are OK for everyone to have" Like you mentioned in your hub, "..What you think to be the most important won’t be the same for the next person.."
However we cannot overlook the fact that breast implants are increasingly and more importantly, wrongfully linked to a boost in self confidence and self esteem. You make a strong point with your post. I'm sharing this hoping that it reaches out to women who may be considering getting implants so that they can make a wise and well informed decision.
Princesswithapen
Princesswithapen, going under the knife is no small thing and we should throughly consider all dangers and reasons before doing so. Thank you for reading.
I've lived in places where it seems the women without breast implants are in the minority. I have also seen the fact that none of these women improve in self-confidence. Men fawn over some of them, but usually not for their beautiful personalities -- which all of them have.
Some years the media is touting large busted women, other times it is the delicate, petite figure that the male-controlled media portray as the object of their desires. Should a woman care what the world seems to think is sexually desirable? No. Absolutely not. We grow in self-confidence through being who we really are and being kind to others. That's the kind of love we want and the kind we want to give.
I've seen so many women -- friends of mine -- who begin to have serious problems with the breast implants and finally need to get them removed. Then their breasts -- their own breasts -- are in bad condition -- and even after the removal of the implants, often the pain and problems do not go away completely.
If a woman has lost a breast to cancer, that's a situation where many women decide to have some kind of reconstructive surgery.
Whether due to breast cancer or due to passing insecurities, of course it is a woman's right to decide for herself. Everybody's body is different and unfortunately many bodies reject the implant process -- some slowly, but still putting foreign objects into the body is risky. Learning to love ourselves for ourselves is a slower process but not risky at all.
Dahlia, you are so right. I learned a long time a go that I prefer men who are attracted to me for what I have. I'm a B cup which now days is no longer average (it used to be) with the growing number of implants. I like what I have and so does my husband.
I don't really have a problem with women who get breast implants if their breasts are really tiny. I mean having small breasts can make it hard to find clothes that are flattering to the body.
I'm on the smaller side of a D cup so I don't have to worry about whether or not I should get implants so I try not to judge those who do. I think that if I had really small boobs I'd probably want implants (not too big of course.) The problem is, most womens implants look horrible. They always go too big and they just look like big painful rocks on their chest. Not sexy.
Thehug, there are plenty of clothes women can wear whether they are small or not. I agree, many of them do look strange and unnatural.
guys now m geting confused, i have low self esteem coz of the size of mine.very very smal dat i use bras with cautions. you cannot see the nipples when m dressed without the cautioned bra. wanted to consider implants, though i knw everything has adv and disadv.
now i ready dont know becuase i have been reading your comments
I have been considering to enhance for a while. I actually have an appointment this Thursday to get measured and get blood work done, then June 6th I would get the surgery...I have put down my none refundable deposit of $250 and now since I have been researching it daily, I am beggening to change my mind... Don't get me wrong, I truly really really want them. I am an A cup with breast feeding kind of sagging skin and this is why I want them, but googling all these sad stories of women with complications has put my heart in a not so easy feeling... I am a workout freak, and to think if something goes wrong I can lose my health and all the work I have put into getting healthy at the gym, well it scares me! Is this God telling me to stop before I enter into a sad place in my life?

Being amply endowed, I've never understood why any woman would risk implanting a foreign body into that sensitive area only to look bigger. Big ones? Try lugging them around for years, with permanent indentations on your shoulders from bra straps. The back aches. No button down blouses because, trust me, they won't stay buttoned. Walking into a room and feeling like a packaged chicken: breasts, leg, thighs, breasts... We are not just our bodies. Better to work on accepting yourself as you are than to play the surgery game, whether implants or reductions.
Love the photo. I see lots of these grannies with globes on the beaches of Florida. If only they knew how ridiculous they look.
