Turkey Sweet Potato Dog Treats Recipe For Older Dogs

3.7 stars from 3 ratings of Turkey Sweet Potato Dog Treats Recipe For Older Dogs

Most treats you buy are hard and difficult for older dogs to chew. These treats are soft and healthy without all the added grains and fillers.

Senior dogs need treats that won't break their teeth off when they bite into them. Some geriatric pets have lost teeth and don't have the choppers to eat those crunchy treats. This recipe is more like a soft chocolate chip cookie with healthy ingredients that won't pad their middle.

Older dogs don't get as much exercise so they don't need all those extra carbohydrates you see in commercial doggie cookies.

My dog loved these and I hope yours will too.

My old dog, Basil. He's 13 and still going strong. He's big for a Boston Terrier, 30 pounds.

  1. Peel and cut up your sweet potato into small pieces, about an inch.
  2. Put sweet potato and chopped garlic in a two quart sauce pan, cover with just enough water to submerge your vegetables. Add teaspoon of salt, turn your stove top burner on high so it will boil. The garlic is for flavor as well as keeping biting bugs off of him. I wrote an article on natural flea and tick preventative, I'll leave the link below.
  3. After it starts to boil turn the heat down to medium high or medium just so it's still simmering but not a rapid boil. While your vegetables are cooking turn on your oven to 400 degrees.
  4. Cook until your vegetables are tender enough to mash. Don't cook them too long or you'll have sweet potato soup.
  5. Drain water and add to a large bowl with the ground turkey, eggs and rice flour. Mash with a potato masher until well mixed. After you've gotten your potato mashed up you can switch to a spoon to mix it better.
  6. Oil a cookie sheet and spread your dough out evenly. Take a knife and cut into squares or rectangles. You want to do this before baking.
  7. Bake in 400 degree oven for about 20 minutes or until they are golden brown.
  8. Cool on a cooling rack; transfer to an air tight container and store in the refrigerator. There aren't any preservatives so you can't leave them out. They should keep for about a week and a half in the refrigerator. You can freeze part of them if your dog is small and won't eat them in that length of time.
