I Love Boobies Bracelets Banned From School
80In recent news there have been a few schools banning bracelets bearing the message, “I ♥ Boobies”.
I’m all for people raising money for breast cancer and realize the seriousness of the disease. I also enjoy titillating humor, but I don’t feel these bracelets have a place in a classroom.
The spokesman for the group says the bracelets target young people in an effort to educate them on the importance of this illness. I feel there are better ways to do this. Our health is important and shouldn’t be taken lightly but glamorizing breasts isn’t the best way to go about it. Young people should be educated on the importance of regular examinations.
One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.
One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime. Clearly these numbers are worse and yet we hear very little about it. Celebrities aren’t holding telethons across all three major networks interrupting other programs to save prostates.
I seldom see people with blue ribbons in honor of men. People aren’t wearing bracelets with the message, “I ♥ balls,” which would also be inappropriate in a school. (I realize the prostate isn’t in the testicles but was trying to make a humorous comparison.)

So why are we more concerned about mammary glands than male reproductive organs? The reason is America’s obsession with breasts. It’s the same reason young women pay a lot of money to go under the knife to enlarge their endowment. It’s the same reason you can hardly find a bra without at least a quarter inch of foam pushing up our bosoms to make them appear bigger. Americans have an unhealthy preoccupation with boobs.
Third world countries don’t see women’s chests as something to leer at, to them they are simply what nature intended them: to feed babies.
I have known two men who died from prostate cancer. I only know one woman who had breast cancer and she is still living. More women survive mammary cancer than men after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Another point many have forgotten is that men can also get breast cancer. I doubt they want anyone referring to their chests as “boobies”.
I’m not trying to refocus anyone’s attention from breast cancer, it is a serious issue; we just need to realize that it isn’t the only cancer out there killing people. When you purchase that pink shirt or send money to help women and men who suffer from breast cancer how about also buying a ribbon or coffee mug for prostate cancer. Your father, husband, brother and sons will thank you for it.

I hadn't really noticed all the attention until your article caused me to think about it. The area in which I live, the slogan is Save the ta ta's. It definitely has become a major marketing campaign. Cancer is scary no matter who gets it but I see your point. I was even wearing one of these pink bracelets back in 05'. As a male, I often am asked about my last prostate exam when I go in for a doctor's vistit. I know it is a killer and am glad you reminded me of this. Great Hub!!
I think you made some good points. Another thing is ovarian cancer is much more deadly since the symptoms are not very noticeable and it gets little publicity. Rated up.
As a prostate cancer survivor, I think the answer is obvious...breasts are a beautiful and glamorous part of the female anatomy, while the lowly male prostate is unseen and utilitarian at best.
Of course, men have been somewhat demonized by feminist organizations for the last forty years, so many in today's society are loathe to care much about what happens to men.
Excellent hub and good point. To me the term "boobies" is almost degrading, and more of a childhood mishap of wording. You are definitely right about the prostate cancer and survival rate. This is the first I've heard of the bracelets and agree they don't belong in school. I think it will give children an excuse to make inappropriate comments and harassing gestures not normally allowed. Thanks great hub
Up and awesome! I think the bracelets are over the top. No pun intended! I would not allow my child to wear it. It's like sleaze moving into a serious subject and there's no room for that. I think cancer should be battled seriously no matter where it is found.

Pamela, that is true. At least we can check our breasts for lumps. Internal organs aren't as easy to monitor. I was also trying to make a male comparison.
Will, sorry to hear you had to go through that but glad you survived. It does seem we live in a misandry environment and I don't understand why.

RHW, I wouldn't allow my teenage daughter to wear it. I doubt she would want to anyway.
My mum is currently having treatment for breast cancer, so I know a little about the subject. I agree with you, that it's not the only cancer that needs attention, and prostate cancer is a very scary one, which needs to be talked about more. I find it very bad that men in the UK are not allowed to participate in the Race for Life (which is a charity event to raise money for Breast Cancer), when we all know that many men are sufferers as well - I would like to see men be allowed to race in that too.
Yes, the wristband is totally inappropriate, and I wouldn't allow my children to wear them - they're all boys, and I don't doubt but that they'd find it hilarious and thus completely miss the point!

I can see boys missing the point. I raised two boys and they love that kind of stuff. That is wrong that they don't allow men in that race.
It is wrong - especially when the race is a national event - races are held all over the country, in virtually every town.
My father died of liver cancer, I had a blood aunt that died of colon cancer, my father in-law is a prostate cancer survivor and I have a niece that is in the throws of fighting stage four brain cancer at this very moment. So understand that I am well acquainted with this dreaded condition. But can a bracelet cause so much harm that an authority figure (any authority figure) will see fit to ban it. I don't approve of these bracelets either and this signifies that we need to start being better parents and stop letting the public authorities do the job for us. Sorry, just felt the need to rant a little.

Thank you for providing such a balance and a grounding to this subject in general with objective, researched information. I agree that any type of cancer is horrific.
Will's comment/ perception greatly saddens me but I can certainly see his point of view.
As a pet peeve to add, there is an e-mail that circulates with a grumpy looking little girl talking about "saving her boobies"... re to breast ca awareness and it is so exploitative in my opinion.

Poorconservative, Sorry to hear so many of your family members have been cancer patients. It does seem to run in families. I don't have a problem with them wearing pink breast cancer bracelets, I just don't think the wording is appropriate for a school setting.

There was a local news report about this and the boys were all enthused about 'loving boobies', as you can imagine.
It's a dumb idea, and so suggestive that I'm sure it will pique the interests of molesters.
Yes, cancer awareness is very important and the word boobies is a very immature word, every time I hear it, write it or read it I feel like I'm back in grade school. But it's just an indication of children's propensity to learn about sex. That's why I think that we need to be better parents. My problem is in allowing any authority figure to dictate what we do. That's probably just the conservative in me coming out. But on the other hand, children without discipline don't grow up to be well rounded members of society. So, even after much thought, I'm still torn on this subject. But I think this is a good Hub and very useful, it's given me something to think about. And after all, that is the point, isn't it. Poorconservative, I think kids should have sex education and learn about cancer but doubt this will truly teach them that lesson. There are better ways.
My next to oldest sister survived Breast and Lung cancer and fought Brain cancer for 10 years ! She past away couple of months ago. I agree with you on the slogans. Myself I find them off color! I'm all for cancer awareness but lets have a little couth about us.

I agree the message in its present context is inappropriate.I am inclined to believe young males will inevitably turn this into something different from its intended purpose. I think Boobies is also inappropriate wording for such a serious matter. I believe young people are smart enough to know the seriousness of the disease and want to get involved - without a hook.
