Asian Man And White Woman Books: Interracial Relationship
88There are quite a few books out there with Asian men and white women relationships in them but not everyone knows where to look. The titles sometimes give clues but most of the time they do not.
Some are out of print and might be a bit tricky to locate but I listed them anyway because I still occasionally see copies in used bookstores, Amazon and once in a while on sites like Ebay.
The books in this list aren’t all romances and men will enjoy reading some of these titles just as much as women especially the ones in the fiction and non-fiction category.
I’ve compiled this list based on genre. I own most of them.
Check back from time to time because I'll add to this list as more become known to me.
This is not a book review. I might give a quick opinion here and there but for the most part this is a list with a short summary of what you can expect in the book. If I did a review on each one this article would be too long. If you'd like to read reviews look up the titles on Amazon and you can find some on most of these.
Romance-
Jade Lee’s Tigress books are pretty racy and could almost be categorized as erotica but the publisher lists them as romance. They are not a series so each book stands alone. If you enjoy a steamy love story with Chinese men and white women you'll like these.
Getting Physical by Jade Lee
White Tigress by Jade Lee
Burning Tigress by Jade Lee
Hungry Tigress Jade Lee
The Tao of Sex by Jade Lee
Tempted Tigress by Jade Lee
School Bites by Jade Lee is in an anthology called Shards of Crimson
This is a paranormal romance about a white woman that is bitten and a Chinese man that falls is love with her anyway.
Jade Lee has a Chinese father and a Caucasian mother and probably why she writes so many novels with this formula. She also writes other types of books so don't expect everything she’s written to be about white women and Chinese men.
The Words of the Pitcher by Kei Swanson
This book is about a Japanese baseball player and his Caucasian interpreter. He is hard to get along with and they haven't been able to find an interpreter that suits him. Claire works in a dusty office on a college campus doing Japanese history research and isn't an interpreter by trade. Since she is fluent in Japanese, as a favor she agrees to interpret a few times for Kentaro until they can find someone else and as romances go they fall in love.
Season At Sanematsu by Kei Swanson
Seabird At Sanematsu by Kei Swanson
These two Swanson novels go together and you really have to have both to get the whole story. It was an interesting read but not really a romance even though the publisher has put it in that category. You can read the reviews on Amazon. Some readers didn’t care for the books but I enjoyed them. I suspect the main reason for the poor reviews is due to it being placed in the wrong genre. Romance readers expect a happy ending.
Tall, Dark and Irresistible by Joan Elliott Pickart
A Caucasian woman and a half Korean man. It’s a cute story and a typical romance.
Love in the China Sea by Judith Baker (This one is old, out of print and may be difficult to find.) A Eurasian man and a white woman romance.
Kiss of the Dragon by Barbara Faith (I believe this one is also out of print.) Another Eurasian man and white woman love story.
Lost in Translation by Nicole Mones.
A Caucasian woman lives in China and likes to frequent the bars at night picking up Chinese guys. She's trying to get over a Chinese boyfriend that didn't work out because his mom wanted him to marry a Chinese girl. The protagonist eventually gets a job as a translator with an archeologist, a couple of Chinese scientists and along the way she falls in love.
The Last Chinese Chef by Nicole Mones
A food author who recently lost her husband goes to China to interview a Chinese chef and along the way she falls in love with him. This is my favorite Mones book of all, I really like this one.
Merger's and Matrimony by Allison Leigh (This book may be out of print.)
A recent widow has to run her late husband’s business, merges with a Japanese company and falls in love with the head of the corporation.
Ice Blue by Anne Stuart
She inherits a work of art from her nanny and puts it in a museum for safekeeping. Gangsters become interested in the piece and pursue her. She has to be protected and that is where her Japanese Knight comes into the picture.
Fire and Ice by Anne Stuart
Another action packed book featuring a Japanese guy and a white woman. This story takes place in Japan.
The Panther and the Rose by Mary Burkhard (This one is out of print and may be difficult to find.)
A Japanese/Swedish man and an English woman romance.
In The Flesh by Emma Holy
This is considered romance with explicit sex scenes between a Japanese man and a white woman.
Shaking Off The Dust by Rhianna Samuels
This one is a paranormal romance between a Japanese man and a white woman. It reminded me a little of Ghost Whisperer.
Miss Hungerford's Handsome Hero by Noel V. Carter
This one is a regency romance between a Chinese/Irish man and an English woman.
Anna and the King of Dragons by Karen Harbaugh
This story is in an anthology called Dragon Lovers and is a short story about a Dutch woman and a Japanese man.
Kyoto Connection by Deborah Kemp (Possibly out of print.)
Force of Nature by Susan Johnson
This one is an explicit romance between a Japanese man and white woman.
All The Tea In China by Jane Orcutt
This is a surprising story about an English woman and a Chinese man. I enjoyed it.
Til Morning Comes by Han Suyin
During WWII an American correspondent meets a Chinese doctor and falls in love.
Impulsive by Helenkay Dimon
Katie accepts money to spy on Eric, a Japanese American attorney but gets sidetracked and has an affair with him.
Bridge of Scarlet Leaves by Kristina McMorris
A white violinist falls in love with a Japanese immigrant at the wake of the Pearl Harbor bombing.
Secrets of the Apple by Paula Hiatt
Fiction-
The Ginger Tree by Oswald Wynd:
It is about a woman from Scotland betrothed to a man stationed in China. During the story she falls in love with a Japanese man, which causes a scandal not only because she is already married but because of the racial differences.
The story is written in diary form and is her account of the hardship of war and living with discrimination in a foreign country.
This was also made into a Mobil Masterpiece Theatre Presentation.
Bel Canto by Ann Patchett.
This book is about a hostage situation in South America in a businessman's home filled with dignitaries from all over the world. A multilingual Japanese man interprets for everyone. It is not your typical stand off story and has surprises at every turn of the page.
There are a couple of unlikely romances that happen but I won't tell you who or how because that will ruin the story. This is a great book, I'd like to see it made into a movie.
Beside A Burning Sea by John Shors
A hospital ship is hit with a torpedo leaving three Caucasian nurses, a Japanese patient and a few other people stranded on an island.
One of the nurses falls in love with the Japanese guy. It is a sweet story and I really enjoyed this one.
The Foreign Student by Susan Choi
A Korean student goes to school in Tennessee and there is a romance between him and an older woman. A bit depressing at times but overall a good book.
Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende
This one is pretty popular, has won many awards and is on Oprah Winfrey’s book club list. It is about the tough life of a Chinese doctor and a Chilean woman in California during the gold rush and Wild West era.
The Man From Saigon by Marti Leimbach
This one is set during the Vietnam War and is about a female Caucasian reporter covering the inside story with the help of her Vietnamese photographer that also acts as her interpreter.
They live together in a tiny apartment. Her bathroom is turned into his darkroom, they eat out of the same plate and even sometimes wear the same clothes but she doesn't realize she is in love with him until the end. It's a sweet story sometimes sad as you see the hardships of war and it's devastation up close.
The Lotus Eaters by Tatjana Soli
This book is similar to The Man From Saigon; also about a female journalist who goes to Vietnam during the conflict and falls in love with a local man who is her guide. It is a wonderful story that gives you an inside feel of how it was during that terrible war.
Although these last two are similar they are still quite different and I enjoyed reading them both.
The Disappeared by Kim Echlin
This made the best sellers list. It’s about a young Canadian woman who falls in love with a Cambodian man and follows him to his country during the Khmer Rouge regime. It is a very moving story; keep a box of tissues nearby.
The Love Wife by Gish Jen
It's about a blond woman they all refer to as Blondie and her Chinese husband with two adopted Chinese daughters. Like many couples they waited too late in life to start a family and after fertility clinics failed decided it wasn't going to happen so they opted for adoption; then lo and behold they have a baby son that has blond hair and looks like mom.
It’s an eccentric story with ups and downs just like real life.
The Barbarians Are Coming by David Wong Louie
A Chinese American man wants to be a French chef, his parents want him to be a doctor and marry a nice Chinese girl. Instead he marries a white woman, has two sons and against his parents wishes becomes a chef only not the kind he wants... he gets a job cooking Chinese food for rich society ladies.
Wrack and Ruin by Don Lee
This is a fun story about an Asian American man who has a Brussels sprouts farm in California and a relationship with a white woman. He’s also an artist and there is a funny story about one of his creations.
Yellow by Don Lee
This is a compilation of stories and a few of them have Caucasian women with Asian men. Most of the relationships are quite dysfunctional.
Get Lucky by Katherine Center
This is a story about a white woman who moves in with her sister and her Indian husband to be a surrogate mother for their baby.
Repeat After Me by Rachel DeWoskin
A Caucasian woman teaches English to immigrants and falls in love with a Chinese student.
Stealing Buddha's Dinner by Bich Minh Nguyen
The main characters are a Vietnamese man and Mexican woman but one of his brothers marries a Jewish woman so we have a very diverse family in this story.
Sophie and the Rising Sun by Augusta Trobaugh
This is a sweet story about a white southern woman in Georgia that falls in love with a Japanese man just before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. It is one of my favorites.
Coffee & Kung Fu by Karen Brichoux
This Chick Lit story is about a woman who is a big fan of Jackie Chan movies and is having career problems. In the end she takes up with a guy who is either Chinese or half, the author doesn’t really say but you can tell at least one side of his family is Chinese.
As the Earth Turns Silver by Allison Wong (Out of print and not easy to find.)
An Australian woman with two small children falls in love with a Chinese shopkeeper during World War I but must keep it secret due to prejudice.
Cloud Mountain by Aimee Liu
This historic fiction is about an English tutor who falls in love with her Chinese student even though she is engaged to another man. The story is about their marriage and struggle with prejudice during the turn of the twentieth century.
East Wind; West Wind by Pearl Buck
Pearl Buck is an American icon that had a great love for the Chinese people and wrote many books about them. This one is about a Chinese woman who is about to get married. She tells the story of her brother and his American wife and their struggles with differing cultures.
A House Divided by Pearl Buck
Another great story by Pearl Buck; this one is about a young Chinese student who travels to America to go to school and meets a local girl.
Letter From Peking by Pearl Buck
There are two romances between Chinese men and white women in this story. The first are the young man's parents and then later on when he is older he meets a white girl and falls in love.
Mandala by Pearl Buck

Almost Japanese by Sarah Sheard
The Russian Concubine by Kate Furnivall
This is a powerful tale of a Chinese man and his Russian friend who fall in love and struggle to overcome a time of war and depression.
The Girl From Junchow by Kate Furnivall
This is the sequel to The Russian Concubine and equally touching as we continue the couple’s journey through China and Russia during time of starvation and war.
Take Me Home by Brian Leung
This is a great story about mining during the 1880’s in Wyoming and the racial conflict between the Chinese and western men.
The Lover by Marguerite Duras
This was made into a movie starring Tony Leung. It’s about a young French girl who has a spicy affair with an older Chinese man.
The North China Lover by Marguerite Duras
This is a continuation of the above story.
Hiroshima Mon Amour by Marguerite Duras
This is also a movie. A French actress goes to Japan with a film crew to film a documentary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. While there she meets a Japanese man at a bar and has an affair.

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford
The main character is a Chinese man who grew up during the Japanese conflict, falls in love with a Japanese girl but cannot marry her. I put this story in my list even though the main characters are not an Asian man and Caucasian woman because later in the story the man’s son marries a white woman.
Jamie Ford's dad is Chinese and his mother is white.
Cloud of Sparrows by Takashi Matsuoka
This first one has very little of the interaction between Lord Genji and Emily but the next one makes up for it.
Autumn Bridge by Takashi Matsuoka
This is the sequel to Cloud of Sparrows. Both are well written and I enjoyed reading them.
Over the Shoulder by Leonard Chang
This is a crime thriller about a Korean man who also has a relationship with a white woman. I'm not usually a mystery fan but enjoyed this book. I'll look forward to reading more of Leonard's work.
Hey, Good Looking by Fern Michaels
It's about a small town in Louisiana with three feisty Caucasian aunts in their 70's and their niece who is in her 30's. One of the aunts lived in Japan when she was younger and had a Japanese lover. This book doesn't have much about the relationship but there is a surprise ending I won't tell you about or it will ruin the story.
Bird and Fish by Adrienne Leslie
Wendy Dale has just found out she has cancer when she meets Hyun Jae Won who owns a chain of paint stores. They become friends and as the story progresses their relationship grows.
Sea and Sky by Adrienne Leslie
This is the sequel to Bird and Fish and in this book Wendy and Jae are reunited after he's gone back to Korea.
I enjoyed both of these books.
Tokunaga's Love in Translation by Wendy Nelson
Celeste Duncan is half Japanese but has blond hair and blue eyes. Since she looks white I'll go ahead and add this story. Celeste goes to Japan to try and find her roots and while there meets Tokunaga.

This has also been made into a movie. It’s a cute story about four best friends that share a pair of jeans that magically fit them all. One of the friends, Tibby has an Asian boyfriend, Brian. In the first two books they are just close friends but the last two books heats up the relationship into a romance.
There are two movies out on these books. If you want the movie with Tibby and Brian you need the second movie. They combined books 1 & 2 in the first movie and books 3 & 4 are together in the second movie.

By Ann Brashares

Interracial Relationships Do's and Don'ts
CommentsLoading...
Wow - you really got a shelf load there - I didn't think there would be that many inter-racial books, let alone white woman asian guy books !
I will make it my business to look a few of these up next time I am buying a yard or two of books to bring back to China with me.
Thanks for this comprehensive list (and for mentioning my novel)....
My brother married a woman that is Chinese (paternal) and Jamaican (maternal). The story goes that Angie's big love was a young, Japanese man that the family greatly approved of, but the relationship did not work out and he left. Angie and my bro met while at LSU. They have 2 sons and live in Davis, CA, where my brother is a professor at UC, Davis. Culturally, it seems some older families still prefer marriages between the same cultures. I know my brother was furious when he was questioned by someone in U.S. customs regarding Angie's "green card" status and the marriage. They've been married for years now and have two great sons.
Hey Pamela, I was reading through some websites about the Strange Angels book series and came across a review by, oddly enough and asian girl who took offense to some of the writing. Apparently one of the main characters (Graves) is half-asian (and yes that can makes a significant difference). Here is an excerpt by the reviewer, including the quote from the book
'I’d be lying if I said the reference to Graves being lucky that he hadn’t drawn the “really slit-eyed card a lot of half-breeds have to play” didn’t make me frown'
So basically, the female lead is attracted to Graves because he's not "too" asian. Funny how you can subtley sneak racism into anywhere. Awesome message for all the young girls out there who are fans of the series.
I had no idea there was such a large selection either although I have read a couple of them. Thanks for an interesting hub.
Hi Pamela N Red, I see you have been Peking through the bookshelves again. All kidding aside, you have compiled a lot of information here.
Thank you for making my dreams come true with this list!! haha I have been searching and searching bookstores and libraries and its SO rare to find this exact type of love story! Its my all time favorite. Plus I am currently writing a historical fiction book about a Korean Slave and a Caucasian woman. Her father bought him away from the cruelty but the damage has been done. So yeah! I need all the ideas and research I can get. This is just wonderful! THANK YOU! ^__^
Nice collection here Pamela. Thank you ma'am!
I was the first white man to date a black woman openly in the county in which I was raised. There's always a "penalty" from the "pure races" - for any deviation of true freedom. God bless!
Wow is all I can think of when I see the list. I knew of some books that you mentioned, but the fact that there are so many...most I haven't even heard off! (Post script, there's Han Suyin's 'Till Morning Comes, Lisa See's family biography, On Gold Mountain I think it's called, and Adrienne Leslie's Sea and Sky and Bird and Fish...also on eharlequin it mentions that "Tall Dark and Irresistible", the hero is half Korean half white) As of now I'm trying to write a collection of fictional short stories detailing Korean Men and White Women relationships through time and nations. (One story I planned takes place in Tang China in 8th century.)
Just wanted to say thank you for this list, its so hard to find stories fiction or not of this pairing
I myself am a mixed white woman happily been with my Chinese partner for many a year and we have 2 kids
Got my first book this morning from amazon (cloud mountain) and cant wait to start it tonight
Another book I would love to add to your list is incorrigible by velma demerson a true story of a white Canadian girl who falls in love with a Chinese man and they have a child, I wont say anymore other than the is a lot of hardship and sadness x
If possible I'd like to add a few more AM/WF romance stories. One is Chenxi and the Foreigner by Sally Rippin (Chinese male/ white female) would be placed in fiction category, and one is possibly Wendy Nelson Tokunaga's Love in Translation (Technically a Eurasian Female/Japanese male, but by all appearances she's blonde haired and blue eyed, not sure if that counts.) Thanks for adding some books I mentioned, but you incorrectly said in Han Suyin's 'Till Morning Comes that they met during Korean War. Erm actually they met during World War II. I hope its okay, but I posted this page in my blog: http://sveta-randomblog.blogspot.com/
Hi, can I ask you to add one to this list? This is written by an Australian woman who herself is married to a Chinese man, and the couple in the series is australian woman / chinese man. It's a supernatural romance involving chinese mythology and Taoism.
So far there are 6 volumes of what looks like it will be a total of 9 books.
This is an Eurasian hub, I'd say.
Well, a few more AM/WF books :D I think one is called Impulsive by Helen Kay Dimon, another is titled Riding the East Wind by O. Kaga, Native Speaker by Chang Rae Lee, Hiroshima mon amour by Marguerite Duras, (All but Native Speaker are Japanese male/white female... Native Speaker is Korean man/white woman.) Also, out of curiosity, in A House Divided by Pearl, do the AM/WF have a happy ending or not really?
Ah, forgot to mention one more book: Bridge to the sun by Gwen Terasaki
No idea why is it that lately I'm finding Japanese male and white female novels, but here's another one, but it won't be out until February 28th, 2012 (Really REALLY want to read it...how will I be patient I wonder?) It's called Bridge of Scarlet Leaves by Kristina McMorris
I'm not 100 Percent certain, but just in case could you check out Kate Furnivall's latest novel, The White Pearl? Perhaps it might be another AM/WF when it comes out :D Thanks in advance.
Believe it or not there's another Pearl Buck story that sort of features interracial marriage; the letter to Peking. White woman with a mixed Asian man.
Hello Pamela, I've seen you on 8 Asians. Very impressive list, I'll definitely have to check them out. :)
This is for young adults: So Totally Emily Ebers and Stanford Wong Flunks Big Time by Lisa Yee. Its an AM/WF hehe, very highly recommended.
Also, there's Fire and Ice by Anne Stuart. I haven't read it but I think it might Japanese Male/White Female.
Your wallet is about to kill me but I discovered even more AM/WF novels; two more are by Pearl Buck (I'm beginning to suspect you may be right. It's called The Living Reed, there's a subplot about a brother or so being together with a Russian woman. Another is called Mandala which has Indian as in South Asian Male and white female.) There's also a book called Almost Japanese by Sarah Sheard that might possibly have Japanese Male and White female relationship. Tiger's Tail by Gus Lee, Yellow by Don Lee (unfortunately only one story kind of has a happy ending between AM/WF. The rest have bad endings :() There are three more books but for the life of me I can't recall their authors or titles, although I'll give the summaries anyways.
I suspect all three are by male authors. Two are written by the same male author, Australian I believe, and another possibly by a Chinese male. Here are the summaries:
One story I recall is a Chinese man falling in love with a woman and there's sort of a telling of one of the Chinese classical novels. All I recall is that another woman is involved and that the white girl gets sick and he has to find the ending to the unfinished classic to learn what will happen next. The same author also wrote another novel that features AM/WF couple something involving the father.
The last one, for the life of me I can't remember author or title but I recall the summary somewhat. A Chinese guy during 1980s comes over to America to study and gains a girlfriend but finds himself unhappy. I think he goes back to China and is involved with Tiananmen Square incident. If I recall right, he's supposed to be the tank man; there might be brother involvement but I could be wrong.
If you or anyone else might know the last three books, please let me know. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Before I forget, there might be a possibility that two books by David Yoo might be AM/WF: Stop Me if you've heard this one before, and Girls for breakfast. If they are, please let me know :)
You don't have to add Yellow in. I remember trying to read it, but it made me feel sad because the portrayal of white women wasn't accurate. (When I dated my Korean ex, my family was very nice to him and treated him like a human being.) It would have been nice if more AM/WF in that book were happier rather than depressing.
Any chance I can share my story blog in here? :D I write AM/WF although at the moment it would be Korean men and white women stories haha.
Mandala is by Pearl Buck. I'll try to update my blog regularly and I'm glad to be of help.
Thanks Pamela..that's nice post
I could be wrong, but I suspect that White Pearl will not be AM/WF
Sorry to bother again, but I don't think Living Reed by Pearl Buck has AM/WF. I suspect that I might have misread it or misunderstood it. Sorry again :(
Sadly, I think AMazon removed Rice on White because its no longer aviable. Hopefully this means it'll pop up someother way later and isn't gone for good I would really like to read it.
Rice on White Dang Won the one aviable on Kindle only.
I saw Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not) by Jose Rizal listed above. It is a classic of Philippine revolutionary literature; however, I don't remember any AM/WF story there, although the hero's love interest is a mestiza (half-Filipina, half-Spanish). On a side note, it seems the author Jose Rizal had a long string of real-life romances with European women, and eventually married an Irish girl (Josephine Bracken) before he was executed by the Spanish colonial government.
There are several series missing from your list.

This is a really amazing list. As an Asian woman married to a White guy (the opposite), it's good to know there are many books about inter-racial relationship. Will be looking for some of the non-fiction titles--they sound interesting. Rated up!
