How To Get Readers On HubPages
86There are a few different ways but I’ll list them for you in order of what I think is important. Of course everyone has their own ideas of what draws them to your site but these are the main points that I've noticed make a difference.
Even though HubPages isn't considered a blogging website some of these same techniques will work for your blog if you have one.
- Choose an Avatar
Avatar is another name for the picture you choose to represent yourself.
The first contact people have with you is that little box with a symbol of who you are. Your writing could be spectacular but if you don’t have a personality to draw them in they may never read what you have to say.
It doesn’t have to be your photo, but you need one. That little default gray guy is impersonal and doesn’t give a clue to who you are or what kind of things you will be writing about. Not having an avatar is impersonal and seems distant. You want people to feel at home on your page; you want them to return again and again to read what you have to offer.
If you don’t want your own photo showing because you want to stay incognito or you aren’t happy with how you photograph, find one that best reflects your personality or what you will be writing about.
Say for instance you have a hamster; you love the little guys and want to tell us all you know about these special rodents. Take a picture of Fluffy and use his picture.
You don’t have a camera or cell phone that takes pictures? The Internet has a plethora of stock photos free for the using just be sure they are public domain clips. I've added a link below to an article I wrote about how to get free photos.
- Write Interesting Stories
You need to have something people will want to read. Do research to see what is out there similar to what you are about to write. You want your piece to be something people haven’t already seen. There is always a new twist or personal take you can put on every story that has already been written.
If your work is compelling enough your readers will overlook a few English errors just because the story is so great.
- Edit, Edit and Edit Again
Make sure your grammar and spelling is up to par. If you need assistance look for books that can help you with any questions or areas you may need work on.
We all make mistakes. I’m sure some of you will find a few in my article but try to keep your writing as crisp as you can and with as few errors as possible. Nothing says amateur like bad grammar.
- Write an Interesting Bio
Write a little about yourself. Your bio needs to be about your writing career and possibly education if it is relevant. Look at the back of a novel in the bookstore and see what authors tell us about themselves. Their religion, family history and animals aren’t so necessary unless that is the subject of their writing.
You can get by without one if you have several hubs that look interesting to read and will in a sense give us a look into your mind but in the beginning and even later I think it helps pull in readers. Someone may be from your area or have similar interests and decide to follow you.
- Read Other People’s Stories-Leave Insightful Comments
Writing online is a social thing. You read my work I’ll check out yours. Kind of like the old saying, “You scratch my back I’ll scratch yours.” Granted, this is no guarantee. If you read other people’s articles but your work isn’t so good you probably won’t have return customers. If you are hopping all over the forum reading, commenting and following people left and right but in turn you aren’t getting many views then I suggest you spend a bit more time at home working on your craft.
Socializing is only a small part of it and unless you also put in the effort it’s not going to happen.
- Follow Other Hubbers
This goes along with the previous tip, after reading and commenting if that person’s work is interesting to you and you think you might enjoy reading more of their work in the future go to the list below their picture and click on “Follow.” Depending on your account settings you will get email notifications or at the very least find them on your home page so you can keep up with any new articles they write.
- Advertise
Any other places you frequent and chat, is a good source for letting people know about your work. Facebook, Google+, RedGage and many other sites are good places to post a notice. Be sure, if it is a social media site that you don’t randomly show up and post a link. It helps if you are already known there and have friends you chat with on a regular basis otherwise it will just appear to be spam.
One day I saw a car with the guys Blogger site printed on his back glass. I wrote it down while at the traffic light and when I got home gave it a gander. It wasn’t bad, not my style of reading but none-the-less it made me look.

You have published yet another useful Hub. I know I appreciate the moral support received from other Hubbers, such as yourself and WillStarr. I have spent some time Hub hopping, to find interesting Hub contributions. I have found several and hope to find more.
I do or have done everything that you have suggested above with the exception of the last one ... advertising!
Thanks and cheers!
I have to agree with you about having an avatar or picture. I tend to skip over hubs when I see that gray guy. It makes me think that if they didn't complete their profile by uploading a picture then they probably didn't do a good job at completing their hubs either. Like you say, it doesn't need to be a photo. A meaningful avatar is fine.
Your hub includes all very important points Pamela. I voted it up.
Just the post I was looking for! The part about interesting is subjective but you're right that if people like what we say, they will overlook the grammar mistakes (which is something I'm terrible with). Pam, when you edit, do you change the content drastically or leave the content alone and just change wording and presentation? Or both?
A little disconcerting that the avatar is so important, but it is the quickest identifying component of one's profile. As has been broached, one also as to be a little careful about being too identifying in bio as 24/7 character of the web is conducive to psycho ex significant others :)
Useful hub, Pamela. All logical, but that is just the sort of thing people do forget. Thank you.
Great hub. I'm new to Hubpages, but I like the community. There are many great hubs to read. Thanks for the advice, especially the one with the avatar.
great
Thanks. How the heck do I improve my Personal hub score?
Nice information. This hub useful for us as a newbie or other hubbers who want to get more traffic and to get readers on Hubpages. Thanks for writing this, Pamela. Personally, I learn much from you. Vote up. God bless you!
Prasetio,
Great tips, Pam! Thumbs up.
Thanks for tips on writing! Appreciate it.
Very helpful. I really like your writing style.
There is some good advice here. I have found that commenting on HubPages results in more followers, but back-linking to your hubs on other websites generates more traffic. My best source of readers/traffic happened as an accident. I was a member of an art website for many years before I realized I could post off-site tutorials for their members to view. I then began a process of linking to all of my related hubs and saw a major boost in traffic.
Good information. Your thoughts are a great addition to a hub I wrote. Hope you don't mind my linking it!
Thank you for the great ideas. I have been writing mostly just because I like writing, but it would be nice to work on gaining a little traffic now and again.
Pamela N Red.... reminds of the old Bugs Bunny cartoon where BB plays little red riding hood and sings "the lady in red...."
If know the one I'm talking about, we have at least one thing in common... Here's to that sweet smellin' wavin' wheat...

Great tips here!
Thanks for sharing!
Great tips and comments I love getting new ideas to improve my writing and hub views. I have to say I'm with you on the avatar also, something I didn't think about until now. Thanks
Interesting tips for gaining readers and followers on HubPages, Pamela.
Thanks for these excellent tips. I can use them.
voted up/useful
Thanks for this Hub. I am new here and everything you have suggested in your article is very easy to understand and helpful! :)
Great hub...just starting mine. Thanks!
Pamela N Red- this is a very useful article. I don't advertise but should. I confine my work and reading to Hubs when I find the time. Voted up. Thanks for the follow.
Thanks for the tips - I need all the help I can get.
Great tips Pamela! I've tried them all except writing an interesting bio. I'm a boring person. If I wrote an interesting bio it would be TOTAL FICTION!!!
Wow as i keep writing here on hubpages , the more i read the more i learn , today i came to know about the avatar selection helps a lot in getting people to read you follow you and like you. Thanks a lot mam
Vote thumbs up, Pamela
Great advice. I try to follow all of your points. You have inspired me to redo my bio.
I agree about avatar, every hubber should have one. For me, it helps to remember a hubber and also gives some kind of idea about that person.
Good tips. I am getting more and more social on HubPages, as it is an interesting community. BTW, what do you think about my avatar? PM me if you can. I had a photo I didn't like much. Your photo is very friendly. Also, thanks for your recent follow. I will also buzz you for a friendship on facebook, (Randy McLaughlin). Toodle-loo!
I am glad that I followed most of the above mentioned helpful tips listed by you. I often edit and re-edit my hubs as some hubs have errors in them and some hubs also need updating of certain information, for example if one wrote a hub about Meryl Streep 2 years and wrote that she won 2 oscars, and this year she won 3rd oscar and this need to be updated. I revise them as often as I can - I am too obsessed with quality, honesty and perfection! This helpful hub will be extremely useful for newcomers. Well-done!
Thanks for SHARING. Useful. Voted up and Socially Shared.
Hi, This should be required reading for newbies on Hubpages. Hopefully, they'll find this sooner rather than later. Really concise and relevant information.
Hi Pamela N. Red, I really liked this hub and the way you presented this useful information. I think everything you listed is key in getting more readers here! Voted up and shared! Take care, Kelley
Voted up and useful!
You have mentioned every point which is important to get more readers. I certainly liked it.
This is very useful. Thanks for the tips. Used to do that too! Voted UP!
Good points here on attracting readers. Easy to read, concise, and straightforward format--helpful for new hubbers and good reminders for the rest of us. :)
These are all valid and useful points. This is a great hub for new hubbers and a great reminder for those not so new.
Great article and very informative! I'm going to use these guides for myself. God Bless!
Thank you Pamela. I am still relatively new to Hubbing, so all of this is great info. Voted up and useful :-)
Very useful and interesting article, Pamela. Voted UP, UP, UP!
Enjoyed reading your tips.
Super advice Pam! I think it's time i jazzed up my profile a bit. I always forget that aspect of things when trying to attract more readers.
You are so right about picking an avatar picture. I oftentimes will click to someone's hubs just because they have an interesting avatar photo that catches my eye. Great ideas, thanks :)
At first I changed my avatar many times. Finally I settled on just using my picture. It now follows me everywhere online other than my business facebook page.
It was decided to use a brand avatar because it is about branding.
The nickname chosen for writing was just something a friend hung on me years ago. What I never envisioned was it has a search engine first page all it's own. It is like it's own little micro niche. This is something to consider when choosing a writing nickname. We did this on purpose when choosing the website URL. It also has a micro niche of its own.
Very useful and insightful hub! It contained many practical tips which will be helpful as a writing luchador from parts unknown, who is still new to this place call hubpages.
These are great tips, Pamela. I usually follow those who follow me and I read their work, but every one in a while, I'll get a follower with 0 hubs. Well, it goes without saying..

I follow quite a few fellow Hubbers and make comments on those that interest me (if I have time), and almost all other Hubbers interest me.
I find that about a third of those I follow and support will do me the courtesy of reciprocating and giving me a read in turn, now and then.
Good Hub Pamela! Up and useful.
